Nice Try, Oregon Trail

So I’ve somehow gotten onto at least half a dozen recipe lists over the past year or so. I’m not sure how it happened, exactly. At first, I kept trying to use the “Unsubscribe” links or buttons in the messages to try to get off the lists, but, to quote Rocky the Flying Squirrel:

So anyway, as my attempts to unsubscribe from these recipe mailing lists continued to fail*, I gradually began to realize that some of the recipes actually looked pretty good. At this point I have close to a hundred recipes in Paprika that I got from a couple of the lists.

Then there was this one:

Hmm, I dunno … I feel like making Oregon Trail Chili would just be asking for trouble, but if I cook it really well it should be fine, right? Right … ?

Dammit, Oregon Trail.

* I’ve tried to use the “unsubscribe” option to get taken off various political email lists. It works just about as well there as it does elsewhere. This is when the “Mark as Spam” button becomes your friend.

  1. I get a lot of recipes, and I’m not a cook, so they just go into the spam file. One, “Command Cooking” has been showing up for a couple of years now, and I’m not alone. They keep sending and I keep deleting…

  2. My understanding is that clicking “unsubscribe” just lets the spam masters know they have a live e-mail and results in more spam, mark as spam is the way to go. I think Oregon trail chili is probably snakemeat, ox tail, and whoever died from a snakebite stewed up with some onion powder. Which most like will give you dysentery.

    1. A few years back we were watching Dickinson and one of the characters left for the Oregon Trail. I was like, “I sure hope we hear something about dysentery.” The next season he was back, having failed to reach California, because his party came down with dysentery and had to turn back, and I was like, “Yes!!!” 😂
