It’s 1996 and the Golden Hour is looking a little bit green. Oh that’s better.

NOTE: The top picture is a scan of a picture from a group of negatives that had both yellowed and greened, while the bottom picture is a scan of the print. (You can see the difference in detail between the two.1) I did quite a bit of fussing with the scan of the negative just to get it to the point you see there, on account of I kinda like the subject matter 😉; to get an idea of what it looked like before I started working on it, check out these unprocessed scans of horses at Caernarvon Park in Barneveld, which are from the same batch of negatives, and the scans of the prints:

  1. In case you were wondering if it’s better to scan negatives or prints, you can stop; it’s better to scan negatives. As long as they haven’t been dipped in pea green soup of course. ↩︎

    1. I actually just finished scanning a raft of 70-year-old slides that my uncle took while deployed to Europe after the war and for the most part they came out fine; a lot of them are a bit scratched or age-speckled but there was no issue with any of the colors. (A few were in glass holders and one of them had been smashed; that was a bit tricky to deal with …)

  1. A fascinating and insightful comparison! Your attention to detail—especially in restoring the negative—really shows. The difference between the scans is striking, and your note about negatives versus prints is both practical and engaging. Nicely shared!

  2. It’s fascinating to see how scanning and editing can completely change the feel of a photo 🖼️✨! The contrast between the negative and the print really shows how much detail can be revealed with a bit of effort. Great subject choice—horses are always photogenic 🐎😉.

  3. Sometimes the ‘quirks’ add character, and the green suits the garden… but the skintones look more natural in the adjusted photo… unless she was practicing for the musical Wicked! … just joking… I don’t think anyone is green in the modern versions of Wizard of Oz… now I’m just ranting… good bye! xx

      1. You read the book!? You’re better than me, I never even knew one existed – silly me I thought it was a musical first!? I like the premise of a good (or wicked) back-story, but I didn’t love the first movie… it was too long!
