So last week, which ended with one of the let’s call it boomier of US holidays, we indulged in our annual tradition of finding something noisy to watch so that Lulu (and, to a much lesser extent, Bean) wouldn’t notice and/or be disturbed by all the popping and whooshing and whizzing and banging going on outside. Your Independence Day Guide To Picking A Noisy Movie

So last week, as everyone in the United States is no doubt aware, we celebrated Independence Day. This involves fireworks. Lots and lots of fireworks. These fireworks may be shot off by your town or municipality, your local businesses, and, of course, your neighbors, and many pets find the noise stressful, including our dog Lulu (the rest of our animals, including former street dog Bean, don’t care that much). We planned ahead for this by getting her a quick-acting prescription medication for her nerves that can be applied half an hour before fireworks are expected to start, and also by lining up a noisy movie for us to watch during festivities. But which one to choose?

Review: “District 9”

So over the holiday last week, we watched the movie District 9. Originally my wife had declined to screen this film, but after hearing from several friends about how good it was, she agreed to go see it. I had also told her it was supposed to be good, but apparently, after suggesting she might like Hellboy because it was made by Guillermo del Toro (she is a huge fan of his Spanish-language movies like The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth), suggesting she might like Kung Fu Hustle because because it was “probably like a Jackie Chan movie”, and trying to convince her that Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a classic of 80s filmmaking, I lack credibility. Go figure.
