So last week, which ended with one of the let’s call it boomier of US holidays, we indulged in our annual tradition of finding something noisy to watch so that Lulu (and, to a much lesser extent, Bean) wouldn’t notice and/or be disturbed by all the popping and whooshing and whizzing and banging going on outside. This year, the selection was Captain American: Brave New World, AKA the one with the Red Hulk1:

The Early Years: Robot … FROM THE FUTURE!
This week’s entry in the list of “Things Jim Pulled Out Of His Pile Of Old Villains & Vigilantes Stuff” is the character sheet for a giant killer robot from the future named Orion. You can tell this is a little newer than some of the others because it is printed with the latest in high-quality dot matrix technology, as befits a Robot … FROM THE FUTURE! Check it out:

So recently I’ve started watching the old Netflix Daredevil series, which is now a Disney+ series, because I want to get caught up before I watch the Disney+ Daredevil series Born Again, since the “Born Again” story arc is my favorite Daredevil one from the Marvel comic, but which, as I understand it, is not really a straight-up adaptation of the “Born Again” storyline but is, instead, a mash-up of some other storylines*, and they decided to use the title just to lure in suckers like me. Whew! Did you follow all that? If so, congratulations. You may be able to read a comic book without getting totally confused as to what’s going on.
Oh, and, before we continue …
Continue reading “Not A Not A Review Of “Daredevil””The Early Years: The Slayers, Part 2 ― Menta As Anything
So here we are this week with the second and final post involving Thunderbolt and his sidekicks, as we present the final four members of the Slayers. These are the nominally more important ones, insofar as when the team got adapted for the Marvel Mania storyboard in college, they’re the four who didn’t get killed off pretty quickly; in fact, one of them eventually switched sides and joined the good guys. Read on to find out who!

So as previously threatened promised, this week, I reached into the pile of old papers from my younger days and pulled out the Villains & Vigilantes character sheets for The Slayers. There are a lot of them (seven in all), so I decided to split them across two weeks*, starting this week with Starburst** (a flying energy projector and the leader of the group at first), Throttle (the speedster), and Monstrus (the brick).
The Early Years: You’ll Be Hearing From Magneto’s Attorneys
So this week I decided to dip into my big pile of old papers that aren’t rejection letters, and as it happens, I’m still in the section that’s full of old Villains & Vigilantes NPC character sheets, and there at the top was a fellow will be familiar to anyone who used to participate in those games I ran, or who was writing on “Marvel Mania” at college back in the day: Magneto! Thunderbolt!
Knowing Your Audience
So as I’ve mentioned before, whenever something we’re watching focuses on anything like a newspaper or magazine article, source code, a computer screen, a dating profile, etc., I am always compelled to pause the video and go have a closer look. Normally what’s displayed is word-like filler material, but finally—finally!—I found a show that really, really knows its audience. That show would be Doom Patrol on HBO Max.
More Odds & Ends From This & That
So this week I’ve got a few more bits and pieces of things we’ve watched that don’t individually rise to the level of a “Not a Review“, but that, taken together, add up to a post.* This includes a television show and a couple of movies, including one which, astonishingly, my wife not only asked about**, but which she stayed up for in its entirety***.

So a few weeks ago I mentioned that my wife had been watching the Disney+ superhero series WandaVision with me. Sadly, this only lasted for the first three-and-a-half episodes; in episode four, the action shifted to what was going on outside of the retro, sometimes black-and-white world of Westview, starting off with … Oh, wait, hang on. For those who haven’t seen Infinity War and Endgame or, for that matter, all of WandaVision:

Those who keep up on doings within the superhero film genre will no doubt be aware of the recently-released “Snyder Cut” of the 2017 film Justice League, which was supposed to be DC’s answer to Marvel’s The Avengers, but which bombed pretty badly with both critics and at the box office. Maybe it should have been phrased in the form of a question …
