Teaser Tuesday 7/11/2017: “Plot it Yourself”

These days, I do nearly all my reading on an e-reader, currently an InkBook Obsidian, but I do on occasion return to the dead tree books of yore. Typically this will be because someone gave or loaned me said dead tree edition. Such was the case with Dune, which, being a door-stopper of a book, I eventually bought in e-form so I wouldn’t have to fight with it when reading at lunch; and such is the case with the Nero Wolfe books, which my father sent to me in a box a while back. I’ve read them all before, but now I’m reading them again, because who doesn’t like to spend some time visiting old friends? The one I’m currently into is Plot it Yourself, in which Wolfe goes up against a con artist with a fondness for pretending that popular novels are plagiarisms of his or her own work, and also for knives.

Teaser Tuesday 3/28/2017: “Lady of Ashes”

This week I’m reading Lady of Ashes, by Christine Trent.  This is a historical mystery set in the Victorian era, revolving around Violet, a female undertaker, and her husband Graham, who is, uh, a male undertaker.  And, I suspect, a gunrunner, although that is currently unconfirmed.

So this week I am, somewhat belatedly, reading Mystic River, by Dennis Lehane, in which a childhood trauma in the 70s leads to a tragic murder in the 00s.  Or at least, that’s how it looks so far …

Teaser Tuesday 8/11/15: “The Golden Spiders”

So this week I’m reading — or rather, re-reading — The Golden Spiders, another entry in the Nero Wolfe series, by Rex Stout.  The spiders in question are not Spiders from Mars, but rather, an unusual pair of earrings worn by a woman in a car who asks a squeegee urchin to call the police.  Hilarity (and, of course, murder) ensues.

Teaser Tuesday 6/30/15: “Schooled”

So this week I’m reading Schooled, by Christa Charter, a humorous mystery involving a murder that takes place on what is, apparently, a thinly-veiled version of the Microsoft Xbox campus, where the author used to work in the same capacity that the novel’s heroine, Lexy Cooper, works at the fictitious Xenon corporation.  The only reason I know any of this is that people on Goodreads said so  Such background information is not required for reading the book, but does give the author a certain amount of inside baseball credibility for writing about the video game industry.

Teaser Tuesday 12/30/2014: “Fer-de-Lance”

So this week I’m reading–or rather, re-reading–a book, Fer-de-Lance by Rex Stout, that’s printed on actual paper. Aged, yellowing paper, even!  This is the 50th anniversary edition, published in 1984, which means that if it were published now it would be the 80th anniversary edition.  Does anybody else feel old?

Teaser Tuesday 5/20/2014: “Jazz Funeral”

So this week I’m reading Jazz Funeral, by Julie Smith, a murder mystery set in New Orleans. This is book #3 in a series featuring detective Skip Langdon. Since I got it for free off the BookBub mailing list, I didn’t have the luxury of going back and starting at book #1, but so far that doesn’t seem like a big deal.
