So lately I’ve been playing a new “experimental” New York Times game on my phone, “Connections“, wherein you are supplied with a number of words. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to divide the words up into four groups of four, based on how the words are related to each other. On the results screen, your groups are displayed in the order in which you figured them out. Here is a recent example where the results, I think, sum me up pretty well.
So is anyone surprised that, in order, I came up with groups for:
- Dances
- Arcade games from the 1980s
- Things you do to interact with your smartphone or tablet
- And finally (and only by default), rappers minus numbers*
Anyone? Anyone surprised?
Yeah, I didn’t think so.
* I am in fact familiar with 50 Cent and 2Pac, in the sense that I have heard of them, but I have no idea who the other two rappers are, either with or without their numbers.

This game sounds like a lot of fun James!!! I like working with words alot!
I gotta do DANCES: Jive, Hustle, Hip Hop & Salsa….there are so many to choose from right?
OK your turn!

2 Chainz and 21 Savage
interesting game. I’ll have to take a look at it. is the goal of the game to get your brain churning with word associations? that seems like a pretty novel way of helping to preserve neuroplasticity.

Sort of! You do have to figure out what the words have in common, but there’s always at least one word that could be in more than one group, so you have to work out what OTHER group(s) a word could go in that would be incomplete if it weren’t there. This particular set wasn’t too bad in that respect ― it has “Tap” which could have gone in with the dances, if that wouldn’t have made too many dances and not enough smartphone gestures ― but there have been others where it’s much more ambiguous.
There’s only one game per day (this being the NYT and all) but you can play previous games in the unofficial archive here, at least for now:
