So this week I was reading (or rather, as has been remarked, finally reading) Storm Front, the first book in the Dresden Files series, by Jim Butcher:
Now, the premise of The Dresden Files is, basically, that Harry Dresden is a wizard in Chicago who is also a private investigator and occasional police consultant. What does he investigate? Well, just let me show you his ad in the yellow pages.
Now, the ad might say “no love potions”, but, in the course of the book, Harry is more or less forced to make a love potion in order to make the potion he actually wants (which, for what it’s worth, is an “escape” potion, which can kind of be thought of as a potion of gaseous form combined with a potion of sudden translocation*); later on, you will be shocked to learn**, Harry’s date, Susan, accidentally drinks said love potion while something dangerous is going on.
Susan’s fingers wandered, and her eyes sparkled. “Your mouth says no,” she purred, “but this says yes.”
I went up on my toes, and swallowed, trying to keep my balance and get her hand off me at the same time. “That thing is always saying something stupid,” I told her.
Jim Butcher, Storm Front
Storm Front was a pretty good book ― quite a bit better than a lot of my recent selections ― so I will be proceeding to read more in the series. It does remind me of an old movie I enjoyed called Cast a Deadly Spell, starring Fred Ward as a wizardly detective named Harry Philip Lovecraft*** who investigates some kind of shady real estate dealing. Hey, it was like 25 years ago that I saw this movie, you can’t expect me to remember everything about it.
But anyway, I was pretty much picturing Harry Dresden as Fred Ward throughout Storm Front. Hey, you could definitely do worse than to have someone picture you as Remo Williams, am I right?

I’ve read this book and a few others in the series. Good stuff.

Ummm…do you mean St. Anthony, patron of lost items? St. Christopher, I believe, had to do with travel, but there’s a question of whether or not he actually existed…

You know, I distinctly remember typing St. Christopher, deciding it was wrong, looking it up and finding it was St. Anthony … Apparently after doing that I forgot to go back and actually fix it!

Ah, I like this series…right now, though, I’m reading a book from another “author of note”. The book is called “Dragon Stones” and I’m enjoying it…though I did spend the first handful of pages going “Awwwwwwww…..” *sniff* *smiles* (And, yes, see what I did there? ROFL!)

Great title for a book! And what a great name for an author…the BUTCHER name conjures up so much!!!!
I admit I’ve never heard of Jim Butcher & his books so will be off to visit Mr. G00GLE to read about Mr Jim!!!
Lately I’ve been reading alot of weird books. Case in point: Innocence” by Dean Koontz. It is a riveting & unique story. Not scary in the tradition sense of ‘scary’; but subtly sp00ky (if that makes sense?)
October is for sp00ky right James???

Yes it is! I’m going to try to get my wife to watch “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix for spooky season, we will see how that goes …
