Not A Review Of The Trailer For “Godzilla x Kong”

So the other day, I happened to catch the trailer for the upcoming film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Whaddya think? Does it look like something I would watch?

Now, although that trailer is mostly about giant apes and a giant lizard (and a few smaller giant apes), there are humans in it. If you blink you might miss ’em, so here’s a still of one particular human:

That look you get when you see a giant monster. Or maybe a wild boar on your farm.

This would be Brian Tyree Henry, AKA Paper Boi from Atlanta, a comedy (mostly) that my wife and I watched last year, which used Paper Boi’s attempts to break into the rap music scene as the framework for some escalatingly surreal and absurdist plots over the course of four seasons. (Season 3 of Atlanta might’ve taken the surrealism a little too far, but Season 4 recovered.) Anyway, upon spotting Brian Tyree Henry in the Godzilla x Kong trailer*, I of course had to subject my wife to it show it to my wife.

Me: “You’ll never guess who’s in this movie.”
Wife: “Who, Jeff Goldblum?”
Me: “That’s a good guess, but no. It’s Paper Boi, from Atlanta!”
(wife patiently watches the trailer)
Wife: “After all the crazy stuff he got into in Atlanta, this isn’t that far-fetched. I can see him in it running away through the woods and screaming.”
Me: “And maybe hitting Kong with a frying pan. No, wait, Kong is on the humans’ side. Hitting Godzilla with a frying pan.”

She also thought the little mini-Kongs were cute. (And by “little” I mean “only the size of a tractor-trailer”.)

Do you have a license for your minkey?

Anyway, to give you some idea what other kinds of situations Paper Boi got into in Atlanta that would make the events of Godzilla x Kong seem like just another Tuesday for him, FX has helpfully compiled a ten-minute highlight reel for you:

In case you were wondering the lead-in to the part where he ends up running through the woods starts at around 1:30. They don’t actually show the running through the woods part, though.

* He was also in the previous film, Godzilla vs. Kong, but we hadn’t watched Atlanta yet at that point.

  2. Man, Paper Boi going through it! This should indeed just be another Tuesday morning for him. I had not seen Atlanta, but I recognized him, Bryan Tyree Henry from Bullet Train (2022) where he taught me one of my childhood shows, Thomas The Tank Engine was, in fact, the key to life itself🚄

    1. Same here! In fact we haven’t been to the cinema since we got our big-screen television, which is probably at least 10 years ago now. Not a lot of point shelling out $15 (or however much tickets are these days) for my wife to fall asleep in an uncomfortable chair. 😁

I think the last movie I saw in a theatre was “Deathly Hallows Part 2” which would make it more like 13 years … 🤔
