That Was The Year That Was (In Music): 2022 Edition

Last week I posted my 2022 reading report from Goodreads; this week, it’s time for my 2022 listening report from Last.fm, in which, possibly for the first time, my actual favorite band corresponds to Last.fm’s report of same. What are the odds?!

That Was The Year That Was (In Books): 2022 Edition

So this year, as it does every year, Goodreads compiled a list of the books I read, making a nice little ― or not so little ― tapestry of covers, along with a few details. You can check out the list at Goodreads here, or look at the screen shots below. The advantage of visiting the list at Goodreads is that you can interactively click on individual books to see their entries; the advantage of viewing the screen shots is you get to go make a nice hot cup of tea while waiting for them all to finish loading. (This year I tried splitting them up into separate ones instead of posting one giant screen shot, though the total amount of bandwidth consumed is, of course, the same.) But before we get to the pictures, let’s review a few notes about this year’s list!

Still, Still Not A Review Of “House”

So, yes, we are still watching House. Given the number of episodes available, we’ll probably be watching it until late spring. And although I’ve editorialized about the improbability of House’s minions doing everything around the hospital, up to and including breaking & entering and digging up the buried corpses of deceased pets, I think that we have, at this point, encountered what must be the most unbelievable thing House has ever tried to get past us. Seriously, I mean, I’m always willing to suspend disbelief, but this time they just went too far. Once you see what I’m talking about, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Not a Review of the Trailer for “Blonde”

So if you’ve got Netflix, you no doubt have seen, at some point in the last several months, the trailer for Blonde, a film based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name. We saw it too.

The film, of course, stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn. Now, I did like Ana de Armas in Knives Out, and No Time to Die would’ve been a better movie if it had just ditched Bond and followed her character of Paloma instead:

However, my wife had some very immediate thoughts on the matter of casting.

That Word: I Don’t Think It Was What You Think It Was

So on the Apple TV, there are many apps, one of which of course is the YouTube app. I don’t spend a lot of time watching stuff on YouTube, but when there are a few minutes to kill—say, for instance, I’m waiting for my wife to come and sit down so we can watch House’s minions jab giant needles into people’s spines—I will sometimes call up the YouTube app for a few minutes. Now, I know YouTube has a radicalization problem, whereby its algorithmic recommendation engine tends to push more and more extreme videos based on engagement, but my YouTube experience isn’t like that; for me, the recommendations consist mostly of funny animal videos, people talking about science fiction or fantasy books or shows, various Honest Trailers, a lawyer’s humorous reactions to various legal scenarios both real and fictional, and indie music stuff. Such as this:

The Early Years: Jim Still Can’t Draw, And Apparently Would Also Be The First One To Die In A Shipwreck Involving Zombies

I’ve been doing a lot of “Not a Review” and “Teaser Tuesday” posts lately, and have been neglecting the giant pile of ancient schoolwork that my folks exhumed from their house some years back and passed along to me. Well, this week, I wish to put that right.

See what I did there?
