Teaser Tuesday 4/18/2017: “The Girl with Ghost Eyes”

So this week I’m reading The Girl with Ghost Eyes, by M.H. Boroson, which is not to be confused with The Girl with All the Gifts. Although if Ghost Eyes are a gift, then I suppose the girl with all the gifts would have them.

Teaser Tuesday 4/11/2017: “The Purge of Babylon”

So this week I’m reading The Purge of Babylon, subtitled A Novel of Survival, by Sam Sisavath.

TBR

Usually that means “To Be Read”, as in, “I’ve got two hundred books in my TBR pile!”  But in this case it means “To Be Reviewed”, as I’ve been notified that my Pitch Perfect winner Shards has been selected for a review by Steve Wetherell at Underground Book Reviews!

Teaser Tuesday 3/28/2017: “Lady of Ashes”

This week I’m reading Lady of Ashes, by Christine Trent.  This is a historical mystery set in the Victorian era, revolving around Violet, a female undertaker, and her husband Graham, who is, uh, a male undertaker.  And, I suspect, a gunrunner, although that is currently unconfirmed.

Teaser Tuesday 3/21/2017: “The Mongoliad”

Still working on book two of The Mongoliad this week — it’s a long one, as you might expect when Neal Stephenson is involved.

Teaser Tuesday 3/7/17: “The Mongoliad, Book Two”

So this week the Moon+ Reader Random Book Selector told me it was time to read book two of The Mongoliad, by Neal Stephenson and a bunch of other people*.

Teaser Tuesday 2/28/2017: “The Invasion of the Tearling”

The Invasion of the Tearling:  Well, I haven’t quit reading it yet!  Actually so far this book is a big improvement over the first one.  It helps that the Queen of the Tearling, Kelsea, is spending less time looking at herself in the mirror, moping over her appearance, and acting stupid (though she could hardly spend more time acting stupid because, really, she already achieved peak stupidity in the first book).  But what really helps are the extensive flashbacks to the (barely) pre-apocalypse life of one Lily Mayhew, who lives in a burbclave with her monstrous husband and accidentally becomes involved with a separatist movement.  Frankly, everything involving Lily is at least three times as interesting as anything involving Kelsea.  In fact, at this point I consider Kelsea’s parts of the story to be annoying interruptions of Lily’s parts of the story.

Teaser Tuesday 2/21/2017: “Invasion of the Tearling”

So the astute reader, or at least those without short-term memory loss, may remember that a few weeks ago, before I got all sidetracked by Shards‘s unexpected nomination as a Pitch Perfect Pick over at Undeground Book Reviews (which it won — thanks everybody!), I mentioned that I had started working on my next project.  That means it’s time to get back to the work-in-progress teasers, which in turn means it’s time to get back to the Teaser Tuesdays for what I’m currently reading.  Because who wants to just see teasers from an unpublished novel?  No one!

Scene-Of-The-Month: “Father’s Books”

The results are in and we have a new winner for Scene of the Month: Father’s Books, another of my unpublished horror novels. Although (unlike perennial winner The Wolf) this one is finished, I’ve decided to stick with doing the scenes in order; and because the first scene is so short, I’ve decided to include two of them.

Where’s Jim?

I’m still here!

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed two things in the last few months:

  1. My posts have slowed down
  2. The promised edition of Father’s Books is nowhere to be found

These two items are of course closely related.  The main reason for both of them is that I’ve been having so much fun writing Dennis’s Diary of Destruction that I haven’t made much headway at all editing Father’s Books for the last couple of months.  I’m sure that I’ll finish it eventually, but for now, the adventures of my gullible, narcissistic, grammatically-challenged, slightly paranoid vizsla seem to be taking precedence.  Why?  Let’s trot out another list:

  1. Immediate feedback in the form of comments is pretty gratifying
  2. I’m enjoying the change of writing absurd comedy and slapstick instead of horror (I would say that much of Dennis’s diary still qualifies as fantasy, my other major genre)
  3. I never made any money off my books anyway

So if you were breathlessly waiting for Father’s Books (that’s okay, I know you weren’t), I apologize for the delay.  But in the meantime, can I interest you in some GIMPed pictures and nonsensical conspiracy theories?
