Why Are You Wearing That Stupid Man Suit?

It’s been a while since I did a “Not A Review” post, mainly because we’ve mostly been watching things my wife actually wants to see. (Even those put her to sleep sometimes, of course, and then I might throw on an episode of Umbrella Academy or whatever; but since at that point my wife is already asleep I can’t really say how long it took to put her to sleep, now, can I?)

Anyway, one of the shows we’ve been watching is Trying, on Apple TV+, in which British couple* Jason and Nikki are attempting to adopt a child. This being a sitcom, there are various amusing complications, such as in this one episode where they are supposed to be attending a costume-party-slash-adoptable-child-meet-and-greet at a local park. Naturally enough they go to the wrong park, only realizing their mistake after attempting to meet and greet a non-adoptable child who is merely temporarily unattended by his family**. The correct location is apparently across town or something, which results in Jason and Nikki spending a bit of time running along sidewalks and through parks while wearing their costumes:

Naturally, this reminded me of something.

Me: “Nikki in her lion costume reminds me of the lion costume in the video for ‘Even if I Don’t’.”
Wife: “The video for what?”

Equally obviously, after the episode ended, I had to play the video for “Even if I Don’t”, a song by Rachael Yamagata. The astute reader will immediately notice one faulty aspect of my recollection merely from the thumbnail.

Furries!

Me: “Oh, it’s not a lion costume, it’s a tiger costume. Oops.”

My wife was already on the verge of falling asleep, but stayed awake long enough ask a question:

Wife (peering at screen): “Is this some kind of Donnie Darko thing?”
Me: “No, that was a rabbit.”
Me (realizing that this is also a rabbit): “That was a weird rabbit.”
Me (realizing that this is also a weird rabbit at the same time that wife is giving me a look that says ‘This is is also a weird rabbit’): “That was a weirder rabbit.”

For those who may not be familiar with what “some kind of Donnie Darko thing” is, here’s a little nightmare fuel refresher for you:

Seriously though, the Donnie Darko rabbit is much weirder than “Even If I Don’t” rabbit.

My wife managed to stay awake for the entire three-odd minutes of the video, on the grounds that she was “waiting for something to happen”, which she ultimately decreed never did. She also wasn’t a fan of the song, apparently, but I do know for a fact that she likes this one:

In all fairness, it is tough to see starlight in the middle of a city

Anyway, it could have been worse. It could have been a cover.

* It took us a while—like, until it came up during adoption qualification process—to realize they are not actually married in the show.
** Which here in the U.S. would probably get them shot or arrested or both.
*** I’m kind of skating over the fact that, given how long ago we saw it and how little space my wife reserves in her memory for useless movie trivia, it’s pretty remarkable that she recalled anything at all about Donnie Darko. But if you’re going to remember one thing about it, it’s going to be the rabbit.
